Kihachiro Onitsuka worked as a salaryman for three years post-WWII before quitting due to disillusionment with self-serving managers. Inspired by the belief that sports foster a sound body and mind, he decided to become a shoemaker to support Japan's youth through sports.
Mr Onitsuka's first creation was a basketball shoe, developed through trial and error. His breakthrough came from observing how octopus tentacles adhered to surfaces, leading to the creation of a shoe with improved grip. This innovation helped a high school team win a championship.
Dedicated to his craft, Mr Onitsuka was known for his relentless pursuit of quality and honesty. He lived a humble and straightforward life, believing in the happiness of others as the path to personal happiness. He is remembered as a devoted shoemaker who transformed sports footwear.
You can find the spirit of Mr Onitsuka in the Heritage room where his legendary collection of Mexico 66 is presented as well as other artefacts from the history of Onitsuka Tiger.
